This morning, the People’s Court of Thu Duc District in Ho Chi Minh City sentenced two nursemaids to three years each in prison for abusing children at a local preschool last month.

Le Thi Dong Phuong, 32, the manager of Phuong Anh Private Preschool located in the district’s Hiep Binh Phuoc Ward, and Nguyen Le Thien Ly, a 20-year-old nursemaid, were given the sentences on charges of “ill-treating other persons” pursuant to Article 110 of the Penal Code.

The jury also ordered Phuong to pay VND20 million (US$960) as compensation each to N.T.H and  L.T.K, two of the four abused children.

Before the jury announced the verdicts, the prosecutor had proposed that Phuong and Ly be sentenced to 2-3 years in prison. Four abused preschoolers, from 1 to 3 years of age, were present at the hearing and represented by their parents, most of whom demanded compensation for the abuse.

The hearing was chaired by judge Vu Tat Trinh, chief judge of the District People’s Court.

The testimonies of the defendants at the trial were the same as those they had given to investigators, the prosecutor in court said. The defendants must also pay compensation to their victims, the prosecutor added.

Phuong and Ly were arrested on December 17 after they were accused of ill-treating preschoolers. As shown in the video clip provided by Tuoi Tre to local police, the various types of abuses used by the nursemaids were: beating the children, strangling them, pressing their heads on the ground, covering their noses with towels, slapping their faces, and even holding them upside down over a barrel of water and threatening to drop them into it. After their arrest, both Phuong and Ly pleaded guilty to child abuse. A verification of the preschool’s profile shows that it has operated without a license since October 2012, Senior Lieutenant Colonel Doan Van Phe, deputy head of Thu Duc Police, said.
