Over 100 crocodiles escape farm in Ca Mau

Saturday, October 13, 2012, 12:47 GMT+7

By this morning, locals have captured the 14th crocodile in Ca Mau province while trying to hunt down for the remaining reptiles after over 100 crocs escaped a farm.

Le Ut Em told Tuoi Tre that at 12 o’clock last night, he heard shouts and came out to find a 50-kg crocodile crawling along the edge of the National Highway 1A in Dinh Binh commune, Ca Mau city towards a river.

He and some others used ropes to subdue the animal.

Sources told Tuoi Tre that on Thursday evening, heavy rains caused the fence surrounding a crocodile farm to collapse.

The farm belongs to Ngo Van Nga, director of Quoc Viet Aquatic Export and Processing Company based in Dinh Binh commune.

According to initial information, over 100 crocodiles weighing from 40kg to 80kg escaped the farm but it is not known if any have managed to crawl into the river or canal. The southernmost province of Ca Mau is crisscrossed with a network of canals and rivers.

Police, military officers and forest management staff have worked with Mr. Nga to determine the actual number of escaped crocodiles, to hunt for them and to issue warnings to locals.
