A group of taxi drivers in Ho Chi Minh City have been accused of overcharging and appropriating property from foreign tourists.

Officers from the police bureau in District 1, Ho Chi Minh City affirmed on Saturday afternoon that they were looking into the alleged offenses committed by several cabbies.

According to initial reports, the case was first reported to the security office of Tan Son Nhat International Airport by a Vietnamese woman, who was on behalf of three foreign visitors.

The tourists had caught three cabs from the airport to downtown Ho Chi Minh City before being overcharged by the drivers.

As the foreigners refused to pay the exorbitant fare, the cabbies snatched a handbag from one of the passengers, which contained US$900 and VND10 million ($441) in cash. 

Security units at the airdrome were able to determine the license plates of a cab and identify one of the three drivers, before submitting their reports to police officers.
