-- The People’s Committee of Mong Cai City in the northern province of Quang Ninh on Tuesday awarded border soldiers in Hai Hoa District VND10 million (US$ 440) for catching an 18-year-old man red-handed smuggling three kilograms of drugs from China on Monday afternoon.

-- The Directorate for Roads of Vietnam has proposed that the Ministry of Transport approve a pilot project to install street lighting systems using solar energy.

-- The Saigon Transportation Mechanical Corporation on Tuesday handed over 23 of a batch of 300 environmentally-friendly buses which will run on compressed natural gas to Ho Chi Minh City-based 19-5 Transport Cooperative.

-- Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee Nguyen Thanh Phong asserted at a meeting on Tuesday that heads of units in charge of areas where crimes remain high for a long time will be replaced in a bid to curb crime and social ills in the southern city.

-- Hospitals nationwide began hiking fees on Tuesday as stipulated by Circular 37 issued by the Ministry of Health.

-- Cao Chi Cong, deputy head of the Vietnam Administration of Forestry, said on Tuesday that a project to build the four-star Le Mont Bavi Resort & Spa, estimated to cost VND300 billion ($13.2 million) and to be located in Ba Vi National Park in an outlying district of Hanoi, has not been approved by the forestry administration due to a lack of reports on environmental impact.

-- Pham Trung Nghia, a commercial counselor at the Vietnamese Embassy in Dubai, the United Arab Emirates, told a conference on Tuesday to introduce a market survey and the trade promotion program of “Vietnamese Goods Week in Dubai” that businesses from the Southeast Asian country have plenty of opportunities to sell their produce in Dubai. The program is slated to take place on April 21.

-- A program meant to instruct elementary students from five schools in Ho Chi Minh City how to properly brush their teeth, jointly organized by Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper and its Japanese counterpart Mainichi, wrapped up on Monday. 

Lifestyle

-- The third edition of a festival held to honor ‘ao dai,’ the traditional long gown of Vietnamese women, will last longer than the two previous years, from Saturday to March 19 in different locations throughout Ho Chi Minh City, as it will include a variety of activities meant to boost interaction with festival goers and further put the attire into daily life.
