Two deadly accidents occurred in Binh Dinh and Dong Nai yesterday, claiming seven lives, including an unborn baby which could not be saved although doctors performed an urgent Caesarian operation on the spot with a razor. At 7:30 am on the National Highway 1 section that runs through An Nhon Town in Binh Dinh Province, Nguyen Van Hau, 34, his pregnant 33-year-old wife Bui Thi Thanh, and their 3-year-old daughter Nguyen Thi Ngan died instantly after their motorbike, driven by Hau, hit a truck. Witnesses said Hau hit the truck, driven by Nguyen Khanh, 38, from Quang Ngai Province, while the larger vehicle was traveling in the opposite direction trying to avoid hitting a tricycle in front of it. Along with police, health workers were called to the scene, including Dr Do Van Hoa, head of the Surgery Department of the An Nhon General Hospital and a forensic expert. Dr Hoa recounted, “At that time, I believed that the fetus could have died, because the mother had died long before, but I decided to perform a makeshift Caesarian surgery in a faint hope that the fetus could be alive. Since I did not bring surgical tools with me, I asked locals to provide me with a razor. However, despite our efforts, the fetus died because of the hard impact that had pushed it out of the womb of the woman.” Hau and his wife had lived with his parents in a tattered house in the town’s Nhon Thanh Ward, authorities said, adding that Tran Thi Lien, 62, Hau’s mother, passed out when she heard the bad news.

Later the same day, another accident occurred in Xuan Thanh Commune, Xuan Loc District, Dong Nai Province, killing a mother and her son, along with her nephew and niece. The accident occurred when a truck driven by Nguyen Duc Linh, 30, from Duc Linh District, Binh Thuan Province, encroached on the left lane and hit a motorbike driven by Pham Thi Kim Yen. Yen was carrying her son, 3-year-old Bui Minh Thinh, Ho Thi Bich Ngoc, 2, her niece, and Ho Trung Nghia, 4, her nephew. The impact killed Thinh and Ngoc on the spot. Yen and Nghia were taken to a hospital but Yen died on the way. Nghia is now being treated further.
