Vietnam tops Southeast Asia’s wood export

Vietnam tops Southeast Asia’s wood export

Monday, November 26, 2012, 20:55 GMT+7

Vietnam earned US$4 billion in wood and wooden product export over the past ten months of 2012, becoming the largest wood exporter in Southeast Asia.

According to the Ministry of Industry and Trade (MoIT), with increasing export volume and expanding markets, Vietnam is currently the sixth biggest timber and wooden product exporter in the world and the second in Asia.

The high quality of Vietnamese wooden products has deservedly attracted the attention of the US and Japan markets, said the MoIT.

However, only 77 percent of Vietnam ’s 13.4 million ha of forests are natural. As a result, the country has to import a large amount of timber for production, which affects the prices of wooden products.
