Three Vietnamese places have been listed among the top 25 destinations in Asia by travel website TripAdvisor, the Vietnamese government said Thursday on its website.

Hanoi was ranked second on TripAdvisor’s best destination list, beaten only by Beijing of China, while Ho Chi Minh City and Hoi An Ancient Town placed 9th and 14th, respectively.

Describing the Vietnamese capital city, the travel website said: “The charming Vietnamese capital has aged well, preserving the Old Quarter, monuments and colonial architecture, while making room for modern developments alongside.”

“Hanoi may have shrugged off several former names, including Thang Long, or ‘ascending dragon,’ but it hasn't forgotten its past, as sites such as [President] Ho Chi Minh's Mausoleum and Hoa Lo Prison attest. Lakes, parks, shady boulevards and more than 600 temples and pagodas add to the appeal of this city, which is easily explored by taxi,” it added.

The capital has also received TripAdvisor’s Asian Destination Awards 2014.

Other locations on the list include Beijing (China), Siem Reap (Cambodia), Shanghai (China), Ubud (Indonesia), Kathmandu (Nepal), and Bangkok and Chiang Mai (Thailand).
