The jury of the 2014 World Architecture Festival in Singapore on Friday honored “The Chapel,” created by Vietnamese architect Nguyen Hoa Hiep, as the ‘Building of the Year,’ the top award at the event. In addition, The Chapel is also the winner of the Small Project of the Year, Landscape of the Year and Future Project of the Year awards. The architect, from A21 Studio, made the building from recycled materials, thereby saving costs. The Chapel is a community space covering 140 square meters in a new urban ward in Ho Chi Minh City. The work is designed as a venue for everyone, especially youths, to conduct meetings, exhibitions, wedding ceremonies and parties, and other recreational activities. The Chapel has multicolor curtains that create a vivid seven-colored rainbow inside the house.
The work has steel pillars shaped as a tree to support its roof; and the restroom and the kitchen are arranged in the harmony of a triangle. The three-day 2014 World Architecture Festival, which wrapped up on Friday, attracted hundreds of firms from more than 50 countries competing in 27 different categories, including Small Projects, Culture, Experimental, Dwelling House, Civil Works, Community, Hotel and Leisure. Among the about 200 works featured at the festival are those from renowned architectural firms such as Zaha Hadid Architects, OMA, Foster + Partners, BIG, Woods Bagot, KPF, and Farrells.
