Both Republicans and Democrats in U.S. Congress back the Obama administration’s policy of strengthening ties with Vietnam and boosting the comprehensive partnership between the two countries, visiting Democratic Leader of the U.S. House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi said on Tuesday.

>> Vietnam’s cooperation with other countries in Cam Ranh doesn’t harm any third party: ambassador The Democrat, who led a delegation to Vietnam for a visit and for attending the ongoing 132nd Inter-Parliament Union Assembly in Hanoi, made the statement during her talks with General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam Nguyen Phu Trong. Pelosi said she was happy to visit Vietnam at a time when the two countries are celebrating the 20th anniversary of diplomatic ties and see impressive developments recorded by Vietnam as well as the country’s growing position on the regional and global stages, according to the Vietnam News Agency. General Secretary Trong applauded Pelosi’s visit and said the two nations’ effective cooperation in various fields, such as economy, education, healthcare, science, and technology, has generated practical benefits for Vietnamese and American people and contributed to peace, stability, cooperation, and development in the Asia-Pacific region and the world. The Vietnamese leader called on the U.S. to continue giving support to Vietnam to settle war consequences, including Agent Orange issues and bomb and mine clearance, and sharing information related to Vietnamese soldiers missing in action.   Such activities will help deepen the trust between the two countries, General Secretary Trong said. Pelosi said there are many potentialities for both countries to expand their cooperation, especially after the Trans-Pacific Partnership agreement is signed and takes effect. She told her host that both Republicans and Democrats in U.S. Congress support the policy of cementing ties with Vietnam and stepping up the comprehensive partnership between the two countries. On the same day, State President Truong Tan Sang, National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Sinh Hung, and Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minh also had separate meetings with Pelosi and her accompanying congressmen.
