Thousands of visitors from foreign countries, especially China, traveled to a coastal resort city in south-central Vietnam for Tet, or the Lunar New Year vacation, according to local officials.

Over 36,000 foreigners, mostly Chinese, came to Nha Trang, the capital city of Khanh Hoa Province, during Tet, which went from Monday to Sunday last week, the provincial Department of Culture, Sports, and Tourism said.

About 25,200 tourists from China spent their holiday in the city from February 8 to February 14, constituting around 70 percent of all foreign visitors and representing a substantial increase against last year’s numbers, the department said on its website.

The number of visitors from other countries including South Korea, Russia and other Western countries was stable, it added.

Over 160,000 visitors, including locals and foreigners, traveled to Khanh Hoa during Tet, about 10 percent higher than during the same period last year, resulting in a revenue rise of 14.48 percent to VND303.85 billion (US$13.6 million), according to the department.

Tourists mostly gathered in the province between Wednesday and Saturday, causing many hotels to reach capacity, although unlike last year there was no noticeable hike in prices related to tourism.

From Monday to Friday, the total number of tourists who visited Phu Yen, another south-central province, was 40,500, including 710 foreigners, representing a 35 percent increase on last year, the provincial Department of Culture, Sports, and Tourism said.

Over 18,000 guests visited Da Dia Rapids, a national heritage site in Phu Yen since 1997, which is the biggest number of visitors the attraction has received so far.
