A nine-year-old boy in Hanoi died from severe blood loss over a cut to his throat on Friday afternoon after crashing into a parked cyclo carrying steel sheets used for roofing.

The fatal accident happened on Tan Mai Street, Hoang Mai District.

The victim was reportedly riding his bicycle on the street with a group of friends when he slammed into a parked cyclo, a three-wheeled human-powered vehicle for transporting goods and people commonly found in Vietnam.

As the cyclo was carrying sharp-edged steel sheets used for roofing, the boy’s throat and carotid artery were cut open, leaving him with profuse bleeding.

The victim was shortly admitted to Bach Mai Hospital in the capital city for emergency treatment, but later died from exsanguination.

Hoang Mai District police said the victim and the owner of the cyclo both resided in the district, and authorities are still collecting evidence from the site of the accident for further investigation.
