-- Nguyen Ngoc Tuan, vice chair of the Hanoi People’s Committee, has just requested that the municipal Department of Construction launch a thorough inspection of all age-old tenements throughout the capital. The check is of urgent significance following the collapse which occurred late last month of part of a state-owned villa built by the French in Hanoi 110 years ago, claiming two lives and injuring six people, Tuan stressed.

-- Doan Tan Buu, deputy director of the health department in Dong Thap Province, told Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper on Friday that samples taken from two recently deceased young girls by the Ho Chi Minh City Pasteur Institute have tested negative for encephalitis.

-- The Southern Electricity Corporation and the power utility in the Mekong Delta province of Kien Giang on Saturday began work on a VND140 billion (US$6.2 million) project to connect the island commune of Hon Nghe, located in Kien Luong District, to the national power grid.

-- Border guards in the north-central province of Thanh Hoa on Saturday rescued seven crewmen of a freighter with 3,000 metric tons of coal on board, which had sunk in waters near Nghi Son Port.

Business

-- Nguyen Nhat, Deputy Minister of Transport, told a ceremony held on Saturday in the central city of Da Nang that work on a recently approved project to expand Da Nang International Airport will begin early next month and is slated for completion in time for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit 2017, which the city will host.

-- Over the past several months, oolong tea businesses and farmers in Lam Dong Province have experienced a tough time as export of the product, particularly to Taiwan, has been grinding to a halt.

Sports

-- The administration of Da Nang City has announced the retention of its Chi Lang Stadium for sporting purposes, which is good news for local soccer fans.

Lifestyle

-- The latest sequel of world-renowned fantasy-adventure film “Peter Pan,” screened in Vietnam starting Friday, highlights several beloved Vietnamese tourist attractions including En Cave, located in the UNESCO-recognized Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park, and Ha Long Bay. However, local tourism authorities have again failed to grasp the precious opportunity to promote the country’s gorgeous landscape in order to lure tourists.
