Vietnam opens door to Polish green produce, Irish pork

Vietnam opens door to Polish green produce, Irish pork

Vietnam has approved imports of fruits and vegetables from Poland, as well as pork from Ireland, at a time when products from China continue to flood the country’s market.

The Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs said on Wednesday that Poland has overcome “the last formal hurdles” to be allowed to export its fruits and vegetables to Vietnam.

The Central European country has tried for years to open up the Vietnamese market wider to its agri-food sector, and is now able to export products of plant origin to Vietnam, the foreign ministry said in an announcement on its website.

The way for Poland to sell its green produce to Vietnam has been cleared thanks to “joint efforts by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and the Polish Embassy in Vietnam.”

On September 12, Poland was added to the list of 39 countries that comply with strict Vietnamese phytosanitary regulations, which control plant diseases, especially in agricultural crops.

Vietnamese Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minh made an official visit to Poland in late July, the Polish foreign ministry said, adding that eliminating barriers to Polish-Vietnamese cooperation in agriculture was on the agenda of the meeting between Deputy PM Minh and Poland’s Foreign Minister, Radosław Sikorski.

The Vietnamese minister was also the honorary guest of this year’s annual Ambassadors’ Conference in Warsaw in July, according to the ministry.

The two states will celebrate the 65th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations next year.

Irish pork imports approved

Earlier this month, Vietnam also opened its market to Irish pork, as local veterinary authorities green-lighted the importation of fresh and frozen pork from Ireland.

Five Irish pig processing facilities have been accredited to produce pork for export to Vietnam, GlobalMeatNews, a newswire covering meat industry news, reported on September 4.

The decision from the Vietnamese side has been welcomed by Simon Coveney, Ireland’s minister for agriculture, food and the marine.

"Vietnam is an important market in Southeast Asia, with a growing population, and there are good prospects for Irish meat exports both in the short and long term," he was quoted by GlobalMeatNews as saying.

Coveney expressed his hope that Irish pork exportation to Vietnam will positively affect the European country’s efforts to gain access to other markets in the Southeast Asian region.

Ireland's pig-meat producers and processors were under severe pressure due to Russia’s ban on EU pork imports in March, according to the Irish Examiner news website.

Russia imposed a ban on all EU pork imports when Lithuanian authorities discovered two cases of African swine fever in wild boar, near its border with Belarus, in January. A similar outbreak was reported in Poland the same month.

Given these difficulties with the Russian market, Coveney said it was vital that “Irish companies had access to as many global markets as possible.”
