Authorities in the central resort city of Da Nang are slated to put stone statues of honorable historical figures on the street to remind locals of Vietnamese history next month.

Such statues will be crafted by artists from the local stone sculpture village Non Nuoc, according to the People’s Committee in Ngu Hanh Son District.

The statues will be erected on the streets that are named for the corresponding historical figures.

The sculptures are estimated to be worth VND200 million (US$8970) to VND300 million ($13,455).

Officials said those streets being selected include Vo Nguyen Giap, Le Van Hien, Ho Xuan Huong, Su Van hanh, Mai Dang Chon, Huyen Tran Cong Chua, Tran Dai Nghia, Minh Mang, Vo Chi Cong, Nguyen Duy Trinh, and Pham Tu.

Nguyen Thi Anh Thi, chairwoman of the Ngu Hanh Son People’s Committee, believed that the statues are expected to create significant attractions for visitors and to nurture patriotism in them.

Many local residents said that placing such statues on the street will promote the stone sculpture village as well as enhancing the city’s image and tourism.

“Such statues will provide our children with a valuable knowledge about the nation’s history and the iconic tradition of the local artistry – stone sculpture,” Le Chan, a resident, told Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper.

An official of the Da Nang Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism said this activity is of highly educational value, suggesting that the district should choose those streets that have good infrastructure and those named for highly influential people.

Bui Van Tieng, chairman of the Da Nang Historical Science Association, said that he firmly backs this idea, “but accuracy and esthetic value are the must-haves for educational purposes.”

“The statues should be positioned in formal or appropriate scenes on the street, and advice by experts and veteran sculptors is essential for the sake of quality,” Tieng added.
