-- The Saigon Notre-Dame Basilica, one of Ho Chi Minh City’s icons, is expected to undergo a years-long overhaul in the next three months, the head of the board that oversees the maintenance confirmed Sunday.

-- The director of a tourism company in the southern province of Bac Lieu said on Sunday his firm has successfully reconstructed the bone of a 100-ton whale. The whalebone reconstruction, now weighing 10 tons, is on display at the company’s tourism area in Bac Lieu.

-- Nearly 200 pine trees aged 31 years old in the Central Highlands province of Lam Dong have been chopped down by illegal loggers but the culprits are now at large, the management board of the forest admitted Sunday, a fortnight after the deforestation occurred.

-- A Vietnamese fishing boat had its left side damaged after it was rammed by an unidentified cargo ship in the East Vietnam Sea waters off the central city of Da Nang on Sunday.

-- Vietnam’s largest dairy producer Vinamilk will be given five plots of land to open two to three cow farms in the Central Highlands province of Lam Dong, which are expected to contribute VND700 billion (US$32.15 million) to the provincial budget by 2025, according to a cooperation deal the firm and the province reached on Sunday.  

-- ActionCOACH, the U.S. business consulting firm that provides professional coaching for small businesses and executives, made its debut in Vietnam on Saturday.

Education

-- U.S. insurance firm Prudential Vietnam handed over VND5 billion ($233,810) on Sunday to the Saigon Children’s Charity for the latter to build three new schools for underprivileged Vietnamese children.

Sports

-- The chairman and deputy chairman of the Vietnam Football Federation, the country’s governing body for the sport, have been accused of receiving bribes worth VND100 million ($4,593) each by a former director of the VFF youth training center.

-- Team Vietnam on Sunday surpassed the target of taking home 70 gold medals at the ongoing 2015 Southeast Asian Games in Singapore as they bagged eight more, sending the total haul to 73 golds.

-- Vietnam will compete for the bronze medal of the men’s football event at the 2015 Southeast Asian Games, where contenders use under-23 players, with Indonesia on Monday, whereas Thailand will face Myanmar in the finale the same day.
