President supports public property disclosure for officials

President supports public property disclosure for officials

President Truong Tan Sang has told the people in Ho Chi Minh City that he supports their proposal that officials’ properties, which have been listed in a declaration, should be publicized for the sake of supervision.

>> Gov’t-granted house of ex-inspector chief to be withdrawn next week

The proposal was made by several people at a meeting between the president with people in Districts 1 and 3 on Wednesday. Nguyen Van Phu, a man residing in Da Kao Ward, said that millions of property declarations by officials have been made but there were only a few shortcomings detected from these declarations. Such a situation suggested that the declarations do not help much in controlling the origin of public official’s properties. Once officials have completed their declarations of properties, such properties should be publicized, Phu said. Many other people at the meeting agreed with Phu. Tran Quang Tuan, a resident in Ben Nghe Ward, District 1, cited a recent case involving the ex-chief government inspector Tran Van Truyen as a reason for the need to publicize the properties of officials. The authorities of Ho Chi Minh City and Ben Tre Province have recently issued decisions to withdraw a house and a land plot from Truyen.  The withdrawal decisions came after the Communist Party of Vietnam Central Committee’s Commission for Inspection released a conclusion on the origin of the properties obtained by Truyen through his wrongdoings. The case of Truyen is a great lesson in the need for controlling properties of officials when they are holding office, not when they have retired, Tuan said. Tuan also suggested that the current chief government inspector Huynh Phong Tranh should publicize his declared properties. President Sang said he approved the proposal on publicizing officials’ properties, as it is reasonable and contributes to improving the supervision of civil servants’ properties, preventing corrupt acts, and protecting the prestige and reputation of the regime. NA deputies will give opinions about this proposal soon to meet the legitimate aspiration of the people, he added. The President added that if they discover any officials making incorrect declarations of properties, they should inform him of the discovery and he will order a verification. He also called on people to proactively contribute to detecting corruption cases and make them known to the public.
