Rain batters central Vietnam as storm Sinlaku makes landfall

Saturday, November 29, 2014, 23:14 GMT+7

Heavy rains and strong wind battered Phu Yen and Binh Dinh provinces in central Vietnam, causing some damage and power outages after storm Sinlaku made landfall on Saturday night.

The power failure happened at some 10pm on major streets including Nguyen Thi Dinh, Ngo May, and An Duong Vuong in Quy Nhon, the capital city of Binh Dinh province.

There were no immediate reports of damage caused by the storm, local authorities said.

According to the Vietnamese National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, after landing in Phu Yen and Binh Dinh, storm Sinlaku weakened into a tropical depression and moved toward the sea border with Cambodia.

At 4:00am today, the storm was centered 350 km east of the coast between Phu Yen and Khanh Hoa in the central region, with winds of up to 88 kph and squalls of 89-117 kph.

Due to Sinlaku, the waters northwest of Vietnam’s Truong Sa (Spartly) archipelago experienced rough seas, with wave heights of up to five meters, from Saturday morning.
