The Hanoi Commerce and Industry Department recently submitted to the city’s People’s Committee the plan to boost the manufacture and consumption of bicycles in the city to alleviate traffic congestion, pollution and save energy.
According to Le Hong Thang, head of the department, Hanoi needs to learn from well-developed cities, such as London, whose government spent US$1.37 bil on the construction of a 24-km road intended for bicycles only.
The project initiators will probe into the current bike manufacture and consumption citywide, weigh the benefits of bike use to the urban traffic situation before coming up with solutions to boost demands and develop the domestic bike-producing industry.
