Vietnamese Foreign Ministry spokesman Luong Thanh Nghi said Vietnam welcomes the Russian proposal of placing Syrian chemical weapons under international supervision.

>> Syrian forces responsible for Banias massacres: U.N. report Vietnamese Foreign Ministry spokesman Luong Thanh Nghi said Vietnam welcomes the Russian proposal of placing Syrian chemical weapons under international supervision. The Spokesman made the statement on September 12 when answering correspondents’ queries on Vietnam’s view of the Russian proposal.

“Vietnam welcomes Russia’s proposal on September 9 and the efforts of the related sides, considering it a positive step that helps ease the current tense situation in Syria,” Nghi said.

He also said Vietnam calls on relevant sides to support and actively realize the initiatives to settle Syria-related issues in a peaceful manner so that peace and stability will be brought back to the people of Syria soon. In related news, U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov will meet the United Nations special envoy on Syria in Geneva on Friday as they work on a deal that could avert U.S. military action, Reuters reports. But Kerry underscored that Washington could still attack if it was not satisfied: "This is not a game," he was quoted by Reuters as saying on Thursday. The talks were part of a diplomatic push that prompted President Barack Obama to put on hold plans for U.S. air strikes in response to a chemical weapons attack on civilians in rebel-held suburbs of Damascus on August 21, Reuters reported. The United States and its allies say Assad's forces carried out the attack with sarin nerve gas, killing more than 1,400 people. Meanwhile, Putin and Assad have blamed rebel forces. The United Nations said it received a document from Syria on joining the global anti-chemical weapons treaty, a move Assad promised as part of a deal to avoid U.S. air strikes, according to Reuters.
