Many young Vietnamese people are volunteering to teach in Truong Sa (Spratly) Islands, a district under the administration of the central province of Khanh Hoa, following the inauguration of the first elementary school there this week.

23-year-old Nguyen Ngoc Ha, who graduated in late 2012 in education from a junior college in the provincial capital Nha Trang City, has been waiting for his result since he submitted an application to be a teacher in Truong Sa in March, when local authorities announced they were recruiting six teachers for the islands.

“I felt happy to know that an elementary school was inaugurated on April 24,” Ha said, “but I am nervous now and wish that I will be recruited to teach the kids there.”

Ha’s former classmate Dong Minh Hiep, 22, also aspires to teach in the district where children, he believes, are waiting eagerly for young teachers like him.

“I opted for a pedagogical school because I dreamed of being a teacher in Truong Sa,” Hiep revealed.

The man is tutoring in the mainland for a living but he never forgets to read about Truong Sa “in order to become a true islander” once he is accepted.

Young women have handed their applications as well even when Khanh Hoa officials said they would give high priority to male applicants.

Nguyen Thi Thanh Truc, a 22-year-old from the southern province of Binh Duong, sent her profile to the recruiter, saying she not only wants to work as a teacher but also likes to dedicate her youth to the inseparable part of her country.

“I may be unable to hold a gun in my hands to protect my own nation like our naval soldiers but I can help educate and take care of their children,” Truc said.

Being rejected as a candidate for a teaching position in Truong Sa in 2010, Lam Bui Thi Thien Trang pioneered to teach in highland areas in Khanh Hoa while waiting for a new recruitment.

She recently applied for it again because her “hope of teaching in Truong Sa will never fade over time.”

“I know that difficulties and challenges are waiting out there for me as a woman but I strongly believe that I will get them over with my determination,” Trang said.
