Vietnam to host 5th East Asian Seas Congress next week

Thursday, November 12, 2015, 16:00 GMT+7

The 5th East Asian Seas Congress, an important international event in regard to sea and island issues, will take place in the central Vietnamese city of Da Nang from November 16 to 21.

Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Chu Pham Ngoc Hien confirmed the date at a press briefing in Hanoi on Wednesday on the upcoming event, which will be hosted by Vietnam for the first time, the Vietnam News Agency reported.

The congress is centered on “Global Targets, Local Benefits – Setting the Sustainable Development Agenda for the Seas of East Asia beyond 2015.”

Jointly organized by the ministry and the Partnerships in Environmental Management for the Seas of East Asia (PEMSEA), the event is expected to be attended by 700 local and foreign delegates.

The organization of the congress is to affirm Vietnam’s position, role and contribution to peace, friendship and development in the East Asian seas in particular and in the international arena in general, Deputy Minister Hien said.

Within the framework of the congress, many seminars, forums and roundtable talks will be held for delegates to share experience, initiatives and achievements in the management and sustainable development of natural resources and maritime environment protection, especially in the East Asian seas.

The congress and its related events are also seen as chances for organizations and parties concerned in the region to define their key targets, schedule and opportunities for cooperation, thereby setting the sustainable development agenda for the seas of East Asia beyond 2015.

PEMSEA was established in 1994 based on the agreement between parties regarding the East Asian seas, including 12 countries, private sectors, research and education institutes, international and financial organizations, and donors.

The member countries of PEMSEA include Cambodia, China, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, Indonesia, Japan, Laos, the Philippines, Singapore, the Republic of Korea, Timor Leste, Thailand and Vietnam.
