The southern Vietnamese island of Phu Quoc welcomed the first-ever flight from Sweden on Tuesday, as Northern Europeans continue their annual escape from winter weather.

The Boeing 787 Dreamliner landed safely at Phu Quoc International Airport from Stockholm for 299 passengers to begin a two-week vacation on Vietnam’s largest island.

It is the first of three nonstop flights Swedish charter airline TUI Nordic plans to launch to Phu Quoc this month, when the winter season ends in Northern Europe.

All of the passengers arriving on Tuesday will stay at four- and five-star hotels during their trip.

From December 2016 to April 2017, TUI Nordic is poised to launch one weekly flight to bring Northern European tourists to the Vietnamese island, Tommy Serban, senior product manager at TUI Nordic, told Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper.

The charter carrier is confident of a bright future on Phu Quoc, which Serban said has a first-class airport.

The Stockholm-based airline also believes that local partners will provide the best possible services for its passengers, he added.

The Phu Quoc airport was commissioned in December 2012, and this is the first time it has received such a modern plane as the Boeing 787 Dreamliner, according to the airport’s director Nguyen Minh Dong.

In February 2014, Russia’s Pegas Touristik brought its tourists to Phu Quoc aboard a Boeing 777, and a number of flights using Boeing 747’s traveled to and from the island late last year in order to bring animals to the Vinpearl Safari zoo park there.
