-- Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong dedicated the second day of his four-day official visit to China to meeting with representatives from the Chinese People’s Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries, the China-Vietnam Friendship Association, and a number of former Chinese experts and diplomats who worked in Vietnam, in Beijing on Wednesday.

-- Vietnam and China have issued a joint communiqué on the occasion of Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong’s visit to China from April 7 to 10 at the invitation of Communist Party of China General Secretary and State President Xi Jinping.

-- Three members of a family were killed after their car crashed into a truck parked on a national highway section passing the central province of Quang Nam on Wednesday. The car was reportedly traveling at high speed when one of its tires burst, sending the driver to lose control of the vehicle.

-- A visually challenged lottery ticket seller fell into an uncovered 3m-deep manhole in downtown Ho Chi Minh City on Wednesday, sustaining slight injuries to his head and body.

-- Ten trucks carrying smuggled logs were seized en route to the north-central Vietnamese province of Nghe An from Laos by local officials on Wednesday, whereas around 100 others managed to flee.

-- Eight districts in Ho Chi Minh City have posted successful results in the fight to reduce poverty, with no households in these localities now classified as poor, or those that have an income of below VND16 million (US$746) a year.

-- The administration of the Central Highlands province of Lam Dong on Wednesday rejected reports saying it plans to grow a 200,000-hectare crop of the macadamia, whose nut is rich in energy and has a good nutrient profile, in the province.

-- National flag carrier Vietnam Airlines said it will add 545 flights to both domestic and international services from April 25 to May 4 to meet rising demand, as Vietnam will enjoy a long holiday on the occasion of its 40th reunification anniversary on April 30.

-- The Japan International Cooperation Agency will cooperate with the Central Highlands province of Lam Dong to set up a flower wholesale market under the Japanese model, the provincial administration announced Wednesday.

-- Those customs officers at Tan Son Nhat International Airport who extort money from passengers on their exiting the country will be dismissed, an anti-corruption officer from the Ho Chi Minh City-based terminal asserted Wednesday.

-- Budget carrier VietJet Air unveiled its plans to launch new services, connecting the Vietnamese cities of Nha Trang and Da Nang to the Chinese counterparts of Hangzhou and Kunming, in Beijing on Wednesday, as part of Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong’s official visit to China.
