A Vietnamese director has recently been appointed one of the jury members at the 2015 Stockholm International Film Festival (SIFF), to take place this month.

Well-known director Phan Dang Di is scheduled to be in Sweden from November 9 to 17 to judge the official competing movies of the fest.

The annual event, which is in its 26th year, sees 21 movies selected for the competition round, including many award-winning films such as László Nemes’ “Son of Saul” and Marielle Heller’s “The Diary of A Teenage Girl.”

Started in 1990 by three film enthusiasts Ignas Scheynius, Kim Klein and Git Scheynius who felt that Stockholm should have a film festival of international rank, the first year's fest saw 45 participating movies.

Since then, the Stockholm International Film Festival has become one of the leading film festivals in Europe.

The event takes place every year in November with around 200 films from more than 60 countries. In the past 22 years, some 3,000 movies from all over the world have been screened at the festival and celebrated guests like Dennis Hopper, Lauren Bacall, Gena Rowlands, Ang Lee, David Cronenberg, Roman Polanski, Terry Gilliam and Elia Kazan.

According to the organizers, the aim of the Stockholm International Film Festival is to broaden the selection of films in Sweden and to offer visitors an orientation within modern films while stimulating a continuing debate.

In 2010, “Bi, Don’t Be Afraid!” directed by Phan Dang Di won two awards for best debut movie and best cameraman at the Stockholm International Film Festival.

This year, Di’s movie “Big Father, Small Father and Other Stories” will also be showcased in four screenings at SIFF’s Asian Images category with 16 other Asian films.
