First sod turned at Korean-invested wind power plant in southern Vietnam

The first sod was turned on a Korea-backed wind power project in the Mekong Delta province of Tra Vinh on Wednesday.
The groundbreaking ceremony was organized by the Tra Vinh 1 wind power company to commence the first phase of the Korea-Tra Vinh wind power plant in Truong Long Hoa Commune, Duyen Hai Town.
Phase one of the Korean-invested project received a total capital of US$130 million and is expected to provide about 173 million kilowatts of electricity per annum after completion in September 2017.
The construction covers an area of 1,211 hectares, 1,209 of which are on the sea.
The plant’s 24 wind turbines will be located on the sea and have an estimated combined capacity of 48 megawatts.
Meanwhile, a management and operation zone will be constructed on land.
With an average wind speed of 6.8 meters per second, the coastal area around Duyen Hai Town is a prime location for Tra Vinh to pursue wind power plant projects.
The projects are anticipated to help generate over 1,600 megawatts of power every year, the Vietnam News Agency quoted Tran Anh Dung, chairman of the provincial People’s Committee, as saying.
The wind power plants are aimed at providing clean energy resources, reducing environmental pollution, supporting the national power grid, and ensuring energy security, said Chairman Dung.
Upon completion, the project is forecast to provide local people with job opportunities, contributing between VND30 billion ($1.34 million) and VND40 billion ($1.78 million) to the provincial budget.
The completed project is also predicted to become a tourist attraction, which will promote local tourism, the official elaborated.
The new facility is part of Tra Vinh’s plan, which was approved by the Ministry of Industry and Trade, to produce a power output of 634 million kilowatts by 2020.
Thus far, Tra Vinh authorities have established six wind power projects covering 7,600 hectares in the coastal areas across the province, the Vietnam News Agency reported.
