An ambulance en route to Ho Chi Minh City crashed into the back of an oil tanker parked in the emergency stopping lane on an expressway in the southern province of Dong Nai on Monday morning.

Nguyen Van Phuong, 54, the ambulance driver, was confirmed dead, while four other people in the vehicle were injured.

The four injured victims are being treated at Long Thanh General Hospital in Dong Nai Province, according to Doctor Nguyen Van Hai, director of the infirmary.

At 5:30 am, the ambulance was traveling on the Ho Chi Minh City-Long Thanh-Dau Giay Expressway when it rear-ended the tanker driven by Nguyen Thanh Cong.

Cong’s vehicle was parked in the emergency stopping lane at the time of the accident.

The front part of the ambulance was heavily distorted.

Dr. Hai said that the ambulance is owned by Lam Dong General Hospital No.2 in the Central Highlands city of Bao Loc, and it was transferring a patient suffering a leg fracture from that hospital to Ho Chi Minh City for treatment.

The heavy impact left Phan Thi Tuyet Nga, 27, a nurse, suffering from spine injury.

Phan Thi Tuyet, 31, a relative of the leg-broken patient, sustained brain injury, so she was admitted to Cho Ray Hospital for emergency care. Another relative of the patient had no injury after the accident.

The patient continued to be transferred to the Ho Chi Minh City Trauma and Orthopedics Hospital.

The two vehicles were towed to the police station in Long Thanh District for investigation.
