The incident occurred at 11 am on September 30 when the bus, which operates on the Vinh City-Hanoi route, was in Nghe An’s Nghi Loc District.

The victims are Phan Dinh Ninh, 39, the bus’s driver; Tran Van Tam, 34, the co-driver; and Thai Viet Hao, 35, the assistant to the drivers.

At that time, Hao opened a carton that a person in Vinh had asked him to take to Thanh Hoa three days earlier, but nobody had taken the box.

Hao discovered a speaker in the carton, and it exploded immediately after he plugged a USB cable into it.

The explosion nearly cut off both of Hao’s hands and caused serious injuries to his eyes and face.

Ninh was wounded in his back, while Tam suffered injures from the pressure of the explosion.

The blast also broke part of a window on the bus. None of the 10 passengers on the bus were injured. The victims were taken to Nghe An General Hospital for emergency treatment. Tam said the sender of the carton had told him that when the bus reached Thanh Hoa, there would be a person there to receive it. Hao had called the number given to him, but the person who answered said the carton was not for them. Hao then called the person who had given him the box, but there was no answer, so he opened it, Tam added.

After receiving a report about the incident, police arrived to examine the bus and collect information.  The bus has been taken to the local police station for further examination. Police are trying to determine what exploded from inside the loudspeaker, and identify both the sender and receiver of the item.
