Vietnam are confident they will provide a strong performance in the third-place playoff with hosts South Korea on Wednesday for the bronze medal in the 17th Asian Games (Asiad) Incheon women’s football category.
The visitors are considered underdogs in the match. In their friendly game in May in Paju City, hosts South Korea crushed Vietnam 5-0.
Vietnam were also beaten by the Koreans in the same fashion at the 2010 AFC Women’s Asian Cup in China.
Vietnamese coach Mai Duc Chung told the media that, “Our rival team are strong at all positions, especially with midfielder and captain Cho So Hyun, and midfielder Kwon Hah Nul.
“They can make dangerous passes and are able to make long-range shots.
“However, their weak point is coordination between the defenders and the goalkeeper.”
Chung added, “We will try to take advantage of that specific point.”
Whatever the result, Vietnam will try their best in this match, the Vietnamese coach promised.
The Vietnamese defenders and goalkeeper Kieu Trinh delivered an impressive performance in the first semifinal against Japan on Monday, when the Japanese beat them 3-0.
In the other match of the last-four round, hosts South Korea lost 1-2 to their neighbors, North Korea.
Coach Yoon Dukyeo of South Korea said, “My players spent a lot of strength in the game with North Korea, so they need to relax and recover for the game with Vietnam.”
The encounter will be aired live at 3:00 pm (Vietnam time) on Vietnamese television channel SCTV 15. The finale between Japan and North Korea will take place at 6:00 pm today.
The 17th Asiad kicked off on September 19 and will close on October 4 in Incheon.
