The fourth session of the 13th National Assembly on November 21 passed the Capital Law in which the Khue Van Cac (Pavilion of The Constellation of Literature) in Van Mieu - Quoc Tu Giam (Temple of Literature) was chosen as the symbol of the country’s capital city.

Specifically, at the session to consider the law including many regulations about Hanoi, 77.31% of National Assembly deputies (385 deputies) agreed to choose Khue Van Cac as the symbol of Hanoi, while 74 deputies (14.86%) disagreed and 9 (1.81%) deputies didn’t vote.

The National Assembly Standing Committee said that the choosing of Hanoi’s symbol was based on many elements and criteria. The symbol must be close to the capital city’s history of establishment and development.

According to the committee, Khue Van Cac deserves to be Hanoi’s symbol since it reflects the country’s ancient culture as well as ensuring the aesthetic qualities. Moreover, Hanoi has also used the image of Khue Van Cac as its symbol for years and the image has been accepted and respected by nationals as well as international friends.

Earlier, in the process of drafting the law, there were mixed opinions on places to be chosen as the capital city’s symbol.

Some deputies suggested famous tourist destinations like Hoan Kiem Lake, the One Pillar Pagoda or the Hanoi Flag Tower to be Hanoi’s symbol. However, the majority opinion suggested selecting Khue Van Cac - part of Vietnam’s first university, Van Mieu - Quoc Tu Giam - the traditional symbol of the eagerness for learning of Vietnamese people.
