Vietnam will host 2019 Asiad if success is ensured: PM

The Vietnamese government will give the go-ahead for the organization of the 2019 Asian Games, or Asiad, in Vietnam if success is ensured with the presence of a feasible preparation plan, the Prime Minister said at a conference on Tuesday.

Premier Nguyen Tan Dung stressed at the meeting in Hanoi that he would only allow the hosting of the multi-sport event if relevant agencies can put forward a feasible plan.

He demanded that a report on the organization of the event be submitted to him next week because he has yet to receive any so far.

“The Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism has reported to the National Assembly [the law making body] but has not sent me any report,” PM Dung said. “I have not heard of it [the organization of the Games] very clearly.”

The Vietnamese premier then ordered the ministry to coordinate with Deputy Prime Minister Vu Duc Dam to prepare the report.

Dung noted that any preparation plan must also be accessible to the people so that they do not misunderstand that the central government pays merely cursory attention to the hosting of the Games.

“Actually we are not giving cursory heed to it. We won the right to host the competition and we agreed with that. But we must build a careful plan. We can only organize it if the plan is feasible,” PM Dung said.

The premier will approve the hosting of the Games if success is ensured, he added.

There has been an outcry from the masses and government officials that the estimated US$150 million will not be enough to host the 2019 Asian Games since Vietnam secured the right to organize the competition in 2012.

Sports Minister Hoang Tuan Anh has repeatedly said that hosting the Games will cost Vietnam the above amount.
