IPU-132 assembly to open in Hanoi today, focusing on global concerns

The opening ceremony of the 132nd Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Assembly will take place in Hanoi on Saturday evening, covering issues of global concern, including international law, threats to peace and security, cyber security, and water resources.

>> IPU leader lauds Vietnam’s efforts in preparations for forthcoming assembly The event, which is slated to run from March 28 to April 1, will comprise of a series of meetings and discussion sessions covering the above subjects, among other important issues, under the common theme of “Sustainable Development Goals: Turning Words Into Actions”. During the duration of the assembly, which is expected to receive more than 1,300 delegates from 160 countries and territories, many bilateral meetings and activities will be conducted between officials of  the host country Vietnam and their international guests. The IPU-132 is also scheduled to adopt the Hanoi Declaration, which will serve as an official document to be submitted to the 2015 Legislative Summit slated for August 3-6 in Seattle and to the United Nations in September this year. On Friday, Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong met with President of IPU Saber Chowdhury and the IPU Executive Committee, who are in Hanoi to attend the Assembly. President Chowdhury also remarked that the IPU-132 will contribute to the United Nations’ policymaking and post-2015 sustainable development goals. He expressed his strong belief that the upcoming IPU-132 will be a success, reaching crucial consensus for the common development of the IPU and international community at large.

The IPU leader told his host that Vietnam is an exemplary model in terms of poverty reduction, disaster mitigation, sustainable development, and climate change response. In an interview with the Vietnam News Agency on the threshold of the IPU-132 Assembly, IPU Secretary General Martin Chungong said that since Vietnam’s accession to the IPU in the 1970s, the Southeast Asian country has made vigorous contributions to the IPU’s activities, making great efforts to promote its relations with the member parliaments in the world. The Vietnamese National Assembly has assumed the position of Chairman of the Asia-Pacific Geopolitical Group and the ASEAN+3 Group within the framework of the IPU General Assembly, the IPU Secretary General said. He added that Vietnam has manifested its activeness and is a responsible member in all the activities for the IPU’s goals such as boosting peace and development in the world and enhancing the role and rights of women and children. Thanks to its contributions to the IPU’s activities, the National Assembly of Vietnam has earned the understanding as well as the support of the international community. The IPU, which was established in 1889, now has 163 members and 10 associate members. Vietnam joined the union in 1979.
