Spain will support Vietnam in fostering relationships with the European Union (EU), Spanish Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation Jose Manuel Garcia-Margallo said Thursday during a visit to the Southeast Asian country. Jose Manuel Garcia-Margallo expressed his belief at a meeting with Vietnamese State President Truong Tan Sang in Hanoi that more businesses from Spain will enjoy effective investment in Vietnam in the future. Representatives of many Spanish firms accompanying him are seeking investment opportunities in Vietnam, the Spanish diplomat added.
The Spanish minister also affirmed that Spain will continue to help Vietnam promote relations with the EU.
He suggested that the two countries should strengthen political dialogues by increasing high-level meetings, while continuing their close coordination at regional and international forums.
President Sang hailed his country’s ties with Spain and asserted that Vietnam is eager to enhance its all-around cooperation with the European country.
The Vietnamese politician also lauded Spain’s approval for a free trade agreement with Vietnam.
He voiced his hope that Spain will support Vietnam during negotiations for a similar deal between the Asian country and the European Union.
Vietnam, as an active and responsible member of ASEAN, is willing to serve as a bridge for Spain to strengthen relations with the other members of the bloc, the Vietnamese leader said.
The president also suggested that Vietnam and Spain launch specific action programs to further beef up their partnership, especially in trade and investment, in the coming time.
