After lashing China’s Hainan Island, Typhoon Kalmaegi slammed into the northern Vietnamese province of Quang Ninh Tuesday night, uprooting trees, damaging houses, and ruining large areas of crops, the Vietnamese national weather agency reported.

>> Northern Vietnam braces for Typhoon Kalmaegi The powerful storm made landfall between Cam Pha town and Tien Yen District in Quang Ninh at about 9 pm yesterday, packing winds of up to 88 kph and gusts of 118-133 kph, the National Center for Hydro-Meterological Forecasting said. There were no reports of casualties caused by the typhoon, Quang Ninh authorities reported. However, the storm submerged and ruined more than 1,000 hectares of crops, mostly in Mong Cai town, they said.

The total damage caused by the typhoon in Quang Ninh is initially estimated at VND20 billion (US$944,000), according to the provincial Steering Board for Flood and Storm Prevention and Control.  Due to the typhoon, power outages occurred in Tien Yen and Van Don Districts and Cam Pha town. Kalmaegi brought torrential rain to many northern provinces, with totals reaching up to 111 mm at Co To Island off Quang Ninh. Before striking the mainland of Quang Ninh, the storm swept through Bach Long Vi Island off of Hai Phong with winds as strong as 133 kph. The typhoon also brought violent gusts of 149 kph and 117 kph, respectively, to Mau Son Mountain in Lang Son province and Quang Ninh’s Coto Island. After blasting Quang Ninh, Kalmaegi continued moving west-northwest and weakened into a low pressure system, the forecasting center reported.

At 7 am this morning, September 17, the low pressure covered a large area of Lao Cai, Yen Bai and Ha Giang provinces, with winds of less than 39 kph, the center said.

Local authorities in Quang Ninh and other northern provinces continue to collect information about damage caused by the storm.
