-- Vietnamese Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minh presented Wednesday the Friendship Order to Thai ambassador Anuson Chinvanno in Hanoi as the latter is set to end his term in Vietnam very soon.

-- Vietnam will consider opening an embassy in Armenia, Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung said Wednesday during a meeting with newly-accredited Armenian Ambassador Raisa Vardanyan in Hanoi.  

-- The first Kilo-class submarine will arrive in Vietnam soon, RussianAmbassador to Vietnam Andrey G. Kovtun told Tuoi Tre yesterday. The Rolldock Sea heavy lift vessel carrying the sub will dock at a port in central Vietnam this weekend, according to www.marinetraffic.com. This is one of the six subs Vietnam signed an agreement in 2009 to buy from Russia.

-- Ho Chi Minh City’s population has reached nearly eight million, the local health department said Wednesday.

-- A Hanoi court said Wednesday it will try a former vice director of the police department in the northern city of Hai Phong for masterminding a scheme to help his brother, a former marine administration boss, escape to a foreign country to avoid prosecution for corruption.

-- Nine houses were destroyed on Wednesday when a fire erupted at a market in the southern province of Vinh Long. No casualties have been reported up to now.

-- Vietnam now has about 101,000 unemployed people who are under 30 and have a college degree, according to the General Statistics Office.

-- Doctors at a private Vietnamese hospital said Wednesday that they had saved the life of a 29-year-old patient who swallowed two nails, 5 centimeters long each.

Business

-- Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung has called for an easing of restrictions to encourage foreigners to buy houses and apartments in Vietnam given stagnation in the real estate market now.

-- The State Bank of Vietnam said Wednesday it can ensure there will be no shortage of cash during Tet, or the Vietnamese Lunar New Year (January 31), when demand for it rises sharply.

Lifestyle

-- 17-year-old Mikhail Samarsky, once considered the whiz-kid of Russian literature, will visit Vietnam from December 26 to January 3 on an exchange program at the invitation of a local book publisher.

-- Vietnam has won two bronze medals at a photography contest organized by the UNESCO chapter in Greece, according to results the organizer announced recently.

Sports

-- Vietnam will hold a friendly soccer tournament from January 6 to 10 when the hosts, Italian club AS Roma, English Premier League club Tottenham Hotspur, and Japan will send under-19-year-old players to compete, the organizers said at a press conference on Wednesday.

Education

-- National defense and security will be taught in Vietnamese schools and universities as from January 1, according to a local law.
