Vietnam, China allow personal cars to travel between border cities for tourism

Thursday, January 14, 2016, 10:08 GMT+7

Private cars are now permitted to cross a border gate in the northern Vietnamese province of Quang Ninh that borders a Chinese city for tourism purposes, according to a one-year pilot project recently approved by Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung.

Residents from Vietnam and China can drive their personal cars through the Mong Cai border gate from now to the end of this year, the government said Monday on its portal.

The gate links Mong Cai, which is a city in Quang Ninh, to Dongxing, which is a city in China’s Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.

Such cars are required to be under nine seats, travel in groups, and abide by Vietnamese laws when running in Mong Cai City and follow Chinese regulations when in Dongxing City.

According to the People's Committee of Quang Ninh Province, Vietnam and China will designate specific tourism firms to take care of the traveling procedures.

The pilot project as well as its results will be reviewed and reported to the prime minister after the trial run is finished at the end of this year.
