Peach blossom flowers ready for New Year celebration in Hanoi

Peach blossom flowers ready for New Year celebration in Hanoi

Many Hanoi residents have started moving away from the tradition of only using peach blossom flowers as a decoration for the Vietnamese Lunar New Year and instead are using the flowers for the secular New Year holiday as well, forcing local farmers to meet the blossoming demand.

In northern Vietnam, the endearing pink peach flower is the signal of spring, causing the peach bonsai tree to become a popular and traditional decoration for Tet.

In the south, locals celebrate the spring and Tet with yellow apricot blossom flowers.

This year, the Tet holiday begins on January 28, 2017.

At the Quang Ba flower market on Lac Long Quan Street in the Vietnamese capital, locals cannot help but admire the Nhat Tan peach blossom flowers, one of the most beautiful species of the plant, and growers said they have applied special cultivation techniques to help its flowers blossom early to meet the growing demand of Hanoians who want to celebrate the secular New Year holiday with the traditional flower.

Nguyen Thi Lien, 51, from Hai Ba Trung District, happily left the market with a peach blossom flower branch that cost her VND160,000 (US$7).

“My husband and I come to this market twice each year to buy peach blossom flowers. Once for the New Year and once for Tet celebrations,” she said.

The flower branches fetch between VND100,000 ($4.5) and VND200,000 ($9), depending on their size.

The ‘pink market’ also attracts young people who come to pose with the endearing flowers.

Growers said they are also taking extensive care of other flowers to have them bloom on Tet.

Special cultivation techniques can be applied as early as one month ahead of the holiday to ensure they will blossom as expected.
