Ho Chi Minh City gears up for wet season

Ho Chi Minh City gears up for wet season

Monday, May 15, 2017, 18:02 GMT+7

Multiple projects have been carried out across Ho Chi Minh City in an effort to curb anticipated flooding during the approaching rainy season.

With at least 13 projects executed throughout the city, the impact of flooding is expected to be reduced compared to previous years.

According to the observations of Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper on Thursday night, several sections of Go Dau and Binh Long Streets in Tan Phu District were fenced off for workers to implement various anti-flood projects.

Nguyen Quoc Ngoc, a representative of the Water Supply, Sewerage and Environment Consultancy Company, said that the work was carried out after 10:00 pm to avoid impacting local traffic as much as possible.

To expedite the project, construction is completed along several sections of the road simultaneously, Ngoc continued.

Local residents have been haunted by severe flooding for years, Tran Thi Hieu Thanh, a local shopkeeper, said, adding that residents had applied various measures themselves to cope with the situation.

Thanh showed several videos recorded on her phone, showing her inundated home during previous rainy seasons.

“I hope that these anti-flooding projects will be finished quickly to ease future hardship,” the woman told Tuoi Tre.

According to Vo Thanh Huy from the Steering Center of the Urban Flood Control Program, the developer of the project, a drainage system consisting of nearly 1.7 kilometers of sewerage pipes, will be added to Go Dau Street upon completion.

Over a kilometer of drainage will also be constructed underneath Binh Long Street.

The project is estimated to cost more than VND228 billion (US$9.9 million), Huy said.

13/40 locations to be cleared

Binh Long and Go Dau Streets are among 13 locations in the southern city where flooding is expected to be prevented, said Do Tan Long, an official from the flood control center.

There are currently 40 areas said to be vulnerable to inundation in the southern metropolis.

Several anti-flooding projects on An Duong Vuong and Luong Van Can Streets in District 8 have been completed, while works in District 5 and 6 are expected to be finished by June.

A further 10 projects will be completed prior to this year’s rainy season, while three others on Go Dua Street, Thu Duc District, and Tan Son Nhi and Truong Vinh Ky Streets, Tan Phu District are scheduled to be finished by the end of the year.

According to the Steering Center of the Urban Flood Control Program, all susceptible locations across the city will be resolved by 2020.
