-- General Ngo Xuan Lich, Vietnam’s Minister of National Defense, welcomed Senior Lieutenant Fan Chang Long, Vice-Chairman of China’s Central Military Commission, in Hanoi on Sunday afternoon as part of the latter’s visit to Vietnam on June 18 and 19.  

Society

-- The Ministry of Transport is reviewing the feasibility report for the construction of the Rach Mieu 2 Bridge connecting Tien Giang and Ben Tre Provinces in the Mekong Delta, costing an estimated US$177 million.

-- A man from the southern province of Dong Nai on Sunday turned himself in to police officers after stabbing his wife and mother-in-law to death over a conflict.

-- Police in the northern province of Lao Cai confirmed on Sunday they had arrested two sisters for smuggling 14 bricks of heroin. The pair claimed they had been hired to transport the drugs for VND20 million ($880).

-- A woman was killed while her two young children, a two-year-old and a five-year-old, suffered severe burns after their house in the south-central province of Ninh Thuan caught fire on Sunday.

-- A seven-grade in the north-central province of Thua Thien- Hue drowned on Sunday after trying to save his younger brother and another young boy at a local river.

Business

-- The Vietnamese government has approved a plan to restructure all enterprises under the management of the Vietnam Electricity during the period of 2017-20.

-- Statistics from Samsung Electronics Vietnam showed that the number of Vietnamese businesses that became Samsung’s official suppliers reached 201 as of the end of April.

-- Nearly 120 million mobile phone subscribers in Vietnam will have to submit their portraits as part of their personal information, otherwise their SIM cards will be revoked and services be ceased.

-- Ho Chi Minh City is set to organize a discount week for online shoppers from August 25 to September 1. Detailed information on the event can be accessed at khuyenmaitructuyen.gov.vn.
