100 captured in police raid on cockfighting ring

More than 100 people were arrested Saturday in a police swoop on a cockfighting ring in the Mekong Delta province of Tien Giang.

Plain-clothes police raided the ring in Go Cong Tay District about 4:00 pm local time, capturing over half of the people present. Around 100 managed to flee the scene then.

They seized a dozen cocks, cockfighting tools, about 100 motorbikes, and even scimitars.

Dang Quang Minh, a police officer, said this was among the biggest rings to have been busted by Tien Giang police recently.

Preliminary investigation showed that the ring had been operated by the couple Vo Trung Du and Vo Thi Phuong Dung for several weeks by then.

Every day, up to 400 people gather at the area, which is inside a garden surrounded by metal wires, to bet from a few hundred to several milion Vietnamese dong on cockfighting games.

The couple also managed a group of gangsters who were always ready to crack down on those who failed to pay for their lost games.

Like any other forms of gambling, cockfighting is illegal in Vietnam.
