A Chinese national has been caught attempting to transport nearly US$1 million in cash after entering Vietnam illegally.

The Department of Police in the northern Vietnamese province of Lang Son confirmed on Sunday that local officers had captured Ly Gia Ky, 26, a resident of Guangdong, China.

Ky arrived in Vietnam via the Coc Nam trail that crosses the border between China and Vietnam in Lang Son Province on August 8, carrying nearly $1 million in $100 notes.

The cash was separated into several stacks and hidden in his backpack, according to preliminary police information.

After leaving the trail, Ky got in a car and traveled toward the northern province of Quang Ninh on National highway 1.

He was apprehended by officers in Cao Loc District of Lang Son Province.

An examination verified the authenticity of the money.

Further investigations are being carried out.

In late March 2016, four Cambodian women were arrested after trying to carry VND3 billion ($131,991) in gold and cash into the southern Vietnamese province of An Giang.

The suspects were traveling on a raft from Cambodia’s Takeo Province into Vietnam.
