Healthcare authorities in Quang Ninh Province, northern Vietnam are adopting solutions to prevent the spread of rabies in the province, while having provided 13 students and a teacher with rabies vaccinations as well as anti-rabies serum after a dog entered their school and bit them last week.
On Wednesday last week, the dog stormed into Duc Yen Elementary and Middle School in the namesake commune of Dam Ha District, Quang Ninh Province and attacked the students and teacher.
They are now in stable condition and being monitored at home.
The dog was caught and tested positive for the rabies virus.
The provincial Center for Disease Control urged healthcare agencies to collaborate with local administrations in compiling a list of people at high risk of rabies exposure.
They are also encouraged to promote rabies vaccination among local residents.
After the incident, the Dam Ha District People’s Committee, chairman Hoang Vinh Khuyen said, immediately disinfected the school and formed a team to count and vaccinate dogs and cats in the district against rabies before March 10.
The district is advising residents to leash their dogs and avoid letting them roam freely outdoors.
A checkpoint has been established, restricting the transportation of dogs and cats out of Duc Yen Commune.
Chairman Khuyen underscored the importance of reporting any unusual behavior in pets promptly to local authorities.
