A three-year-old baby from Gia Lai Province in Vietnam’s Central Highlands region died of rabies on Monday after he was bitten by a cat about one month ago, a local health official confirmed the same day.

The boy, named K.K. and residing in Chu Se District, was taken to a private medical facility on Sunday where he underwent ultrasound scanning and got prescribed medicine for vomiting, the official of the Gia Lai Center for Disease Control said.

Since his health condition then worsened, he was rushed to the Chu Se Medical Center at 1:34 pm on Sunday before being transferred to the Gia Lai Children’s Hospital to receive further treatment on the same day.

He was diagnosed with rabies, gastrointestinal infection, and dehydration.

His family said that the boy was bitten on the left hand by a cat one month ago but he did not receive treatment for the wound nor was he vaccinated against rabies due to the family's financial difficulties.

After being briefed on his incurable condition, the family brought him home, where he developed many symptoms such as screaming; eating, drinking, and swallowing difficulties; drooling; a fear of light, wind, and water; and headaches.

The boy died on Monday morning.
