-- On the second day of their first-ever state visit to Vietnam since 1973, Japanese Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko is scheduled to pay a visit on Thursday to former Vietnamese exchange students who pursued their studies in Japan, visit the Biological Museum of the Vietnam National University – Hanoi and meet with families of Japanese war veterans who are living in Vietnam.

-- The red streak of water that reappeared along the coast of Ha Tinh Province in north-central Vietnam on February 18 has been found to be linked to a phenomenon known as algal bloom, or red tide, according to lab tests carried out by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment.

-- Le Kim Toan, deputy secretary of Binh Dinh Province’s Party Committee, has returned over VND386 million (US$17,200) in government funds used to pay for his doctoral studies in the Philippines, after he was found to be untruthful about the nature of his course while his PhD is not recognized by Vietnam’s Ministry of Education and Training.

-- A VND16 billion ($714,300) U.S.-funded center for the prevention and mitigation of natural disasters was partially inaugurated on Wednesday in south-central Vietnam’s Ninh Thuan Province, and its second phase is expected to be carried out in the near future.

-- An ATM machine of the Vietnam Public Joint-stock Commercial Bank (PVcomBank) on Wednesday was discovered giving customers paper sheets printed with the number 500,000 instead of real cash. The bank later explained that the machine had just been installed and the papers had been used to test its functionality.

-- A fish sauce producer in Binh Duong Province has been fined over excessive levels of combined arsenic content in their products, while the company argued that Vietnamese laws only set a limit for inorganic arsenic content in food.

-- The second German Science Day in Vietnam was held on Wednesday in Ho Chi Minh City, in celebration of the countries’ bilateral cooperation in science and technology, where government officials and scholars reviewed achievements in sustainability research made by joint efforts in the last two decades.
