Politics

-- Hanoi on Friday elected three new Vice Chairmen for its People’s Committee at the ninth meeting of the People’s Council. The newly-elected include Le Hong Son, member of the municipal Party Standing Committee and former Deputy Minister of Justice; Le Quoc Hung, Director of the municipal Department of Transport; and Nguyen Ngoc Tuan, Chairman of the Hanoi Housing Development and Investment Corporation.

Society -- At a press conference held on Friday by the Ministry of Health to clarify some issues related to measles that has spread to 61 of the country’s total 63 provinces and cities and caused 116 deaths, Deputy Minister of Health Nguyen Thanh Long said the Ministry has yet to declare the measles an epidemic. However, he said, the Ministry has publicly announced the wide spread of the disease.  

-- More than 1,000 liters of acid contained in one of the four tanks on a truck flowed out onto DT743 Road in Tan Dong Hiep Ward, southern Binh Duong Province on Friday morning. The acid got out from the tank from some cracks on the container that were created when the four tanks collided with each other during transport. Concerned agencies were called to the scene to handle the incident. -- Ninety-seven students of a primary school in District 9, Ho Chi Minh City suffered from food poisoning symptoms after lunch at schoolon Friday. Thirty-three of these students were given treatment and care at the school by a health team from the District 9 Hospital while the remaining 64 students were taken to the hospital. All the victims suffered from vomiting, fever and stomachache after eating fried rice at their lunch. -- The Ho Chi Minh City Health Department on Friday summoned Dr Kieu Thuy Trung to its office to clarify the allegation that he has put his name in the operation license of An Binh Dental Clinic in District 8 and then illegally leased the license to an individual who operates that clinic. Thw summon was made after Tuoi Tre published three articles exposing many illegal acts related to private dental clinics in the city. As Dr Trung did not come, the department said it will serve the second summon on the doctor.  -- Police in the Central Highlands province of Lam Dong are investigating a striking case in which a 28-year-old man allegedly stabbed his two children – three and five years old – to death and then killed himself with a knife at their home in the province’s Bao Loc City on Friday afternoon.  All the three were found lying dead on a bed with a knife plunged in the father’s chest.

Business --  The Ho Chi Minh City Tax Department has issued decisions to collect personal income tax arrears from and give fines to a number of shareholders at Pho 24 Trading and Service Company and the Hoan My Medical Joint Stock Company.  The total amount of tax arrears and fines amounted to over VND182 billion (US$8.6 million).  -- Vietnam National Coal - Mineral Industries Group (Vinacomin) has signed a contract to lend US$300 million from Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation for the Nhan Co alumina project in the Central Highlands province of Dak Nong, Vinacomin general director Nguyen Van Bien said. -- The Ho Chi Minh City Transport Department will arrange for a sea-going ship with a tonnage of 30,000 tons to enter Soai Rap River to travel to a seaport in the city on a pilot basis today. The river has recently been dredged and expanded to make it able to accommodate large ships, opening a new route for cargo ships to travel to the city’s seaports. The new route is 20 km shorter than the current one -- Long Tau River.Education -- Swiss astrophysicist Michel G. E. Mayor made a presentation titled “Other worlds in the universe?” at the Ho Chi Minh City University of Natural Science on Friday, drawing the attention of more than 200 students, teachers and those who love science. After visiting HCMC, Professor Mayor will go to the south-central city of Quy Nhon to chair an international conference themed with “Science of planets outside the solar system” on April 20-26.    Sports -- Chelsea welcome Sunderland to Stamford Bridge this Saturday for a match within the 33nd round of the English Premiership at 11:30 pm today (Vietnam time). Chelsea will have to try its best to defeat its rival if it wants to be able to compete with Liverpool in the race to the championship.
