Ho Chi Minh City police on Wednesday arrested a monk who injured three monks and killed a nun in a pagoda in Thu Duc District.

Ngo Van Huy, 21, a monk from the north-central province of Nghe An residing in a pagoda in the southern province of Ba Ria-Vung Tau, was detained by municipal police on charges of murder and assault.

On Tuesday, Huy arrived at Buu Quang Pagoda, where he had been ordained as a Buddhist monk. Upon his arrival, Huy came into conflict with two other monks.

At 10:00 am on Wednesday, Huy secured a knife from inside the pagoda and assaulted the two other monks.

Despite their injuries, the two monks were able to take the knife from Huy and report the incident to a senior monk temporarily administering the pagoda.

While the senior monk was judging the issue, Huy managed to grab the knife from one of the injured monks and stab the senior monk.

The injured fled and notified the rest of the venue of the incident.

In the commotion, Huy was able to stab an elderly woman in her wheelchair before being caught by police.

The four victims were hospitalized and the woman succumbed to her wounds before passing away.

The deceased was identified as Tu Ngoc, 102, a nun who had lived in the pagoda since 1952.

The three injured monks were Nguyen Van Mao, Tran Minh Duc, and Le Van Linh, according to police.

After being notified of the incident, Thien Minh, the monk in charge of administering Buu Quang Pagoda, requested police to apply strict measures in the case.

Police are evaluating Huy’s mental health and are investigating the possibility he was under the influence of meth before committing the crime.

Monk Thich Thien Tanh from the Ho Chi Minh City Buddhist Sangha of Vietnam told Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper that Huy has mental problems, citing the report from Buu Quang Pagoda.

“But Huy’s health status has not been clearly checked,” monk Thich Thien Tanh added.

“We’ve asked police to investigate for more accurate information.”
