-- Vietnam opposed China’s election of members to the People’s Congress in the so-called Sansha City and the illegal patrol in the Hoang Sa (Paracel) archipelago, Ministry of Foreign Affairs Spokesperson Le Hai Binh said on Monday.

Society

-- The K Hospital and Vietnam-Germany Hospital in Hanoi on Monday joined hands with experts from South Korea and Japan in surgeries for gastrointestinal cancer.

-- Engines of two Vietnam Airlines planes were damaged by birds as the aircraft were landing at Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City airports on Sunday night, resulting in the delay of several domestic and international flights, the national carrier reported.

-- Naval ship 732 succeeded in rescuing 15 fishermen on Monday evening, after their boats encountered an accident some 40 nautical miles east of the Truong Sa (Spratly) archipelago on the morning of the same day.

-- Two people, including a cabby and his passenger, were killed after a taxi exploded in the northern province of Quang Ninh on Monday afternoon. Initial investigation pinpointed that it was a suicide bomb blast carried out by the passenger.

-- Police in the north-central province of Nghe An affirmed on Monday that a truck driver would be fined up to VND8 million (US$359.6) for driving with his legs. The offender was traveling with his younger brother, who filmed his wrongful action and posted the video on their Facebook pages.

Business

-- The Ministry of Planning and Investment has publicized the identities of state-owned enterprises that failed to provide transparent information as required by the law.

-- A South Korean business has eyed the investment potential of building a horse racing track and entertainment complex in the northern province of Bac Ninh, with capital for the first phase estimated at $500 million.

-- The Vietnam-India bilateral trade turnover in the first eight months of 2016 was recorded at $3.47 billion, according to the General Department of Vietnam Customs.
