College urges students to use Facebook, Twitter

A private junior college in central Vietnam is doing what not many other schools can do and has thus drawn much attention: encouraging its students to join Facebook and Twitter, offering cheap meals to needy students, and providing free dorms to all freshmen.

All first-year students at Duc Tri Junior College, located in Da Nang City, are allowed to stay free of charge in its dormitory, according to the school’s policy.

“I feel lucky to be offered free accommodation by the school,” Dinh Van Cua, a student, said. “I would have to pay at least VND700,000-800,000 (US$33-38) each month without this policy while my parents are only able to provide me with a monthly allowance of VND500,000 ($24).”

Duc Tri students are always encouraged to sign up for a Facebook or Twitter account “to learn” and get updates on what is going on in society before they are officially admitted to the dorm, Truong Van Hung, Duc Tri president, said.

But they are completely banned from badmouthing or smearing other people, Hung added.

Hung explained that it is unfeasible to prohibit students from using Facebook or Twitter in this digital age.

Duc Tri is now supplying meals, which cost VND13,000-15,000 (62-71 US cents) each, at VND3,000 (14 US cents) per portion to those students who face financial difficulty.

Almost 30 Duc Tri alumni, lecturers, and staff have contributed to sponsor such meals, the president said.

“We charge VND3,000 in order to get our students to understand that they buy the meals, not beg for them,” Hung elaborated.

Duc Tri was established as a private junior college on March 8, 2005 pursuant to a Ministry of Education and Training decision.

Nearly 1,000 students are enrolled at this school, which runs courses in biotechnology, environmental engineering, accounting, finance-banking, business administration, electrical engineering, applied information technology, among others.
