A minute-long clip showing two boys in the southern province of Binh Phuoc being made to compete in beer-drinking by adults went viral on Vietnam’s social media, sparking fury amongst netizens.

The footage was uploaded by a Facebook user from Binh Phuoc last week, and has harnessed nearly 50,000 views in just four days.

Two small boys were surrounded by a group of grown-ups who made them drink glasses after glasses of beer as a competition, according to the video seen by Tuoi Tre News.

One of the boys turned away after finishing his glass of beer in one gulp, but was forced to continue by a man who called him his “nephew.”

A man’s voice could be heard in the clip telling them to stop since it could be dangerous for the kids, but no one in the excited crowd seemed to listen.

The comment section under the video was flooded with objection and discontent, calling the action of the grown-ups in the clip “disaster for the future” and “destructive to a generation.”

Facebook user Le Lien commented on the clip, “In foreign countries, you are punished by law for underage drinking. Those who sell alcoholic drinks to people under 21 are also criminalized.”

The uploader of the clip also came under criticism for posting the material online, despite the caption reading “Children are like white papers. They turn out to be exactly what adults draw on them.”

Vietnam is among the 25 countries with the highest increase rates of alcohol and beer consumption, according to a 2014 report by the Health Ministry’s Institute of Health Strategy and Policy.
