Tourism banner relocates Hanoi’s iconic monument to Ho Chi Minh City

Tourism banner relocates Hanoi’s iconic monument to Ho Chi Minh City

A promotional banner located at an airport in Myanmar has been found to have mistakenly used an iconic structure in Hanoi to represent Ho Chi Minh City.

The giant billboard at Yangon International Airport features a map of Vietnam, with locations known to tourists around the world, including an image purporting to be the most well-known attraction there.

A photo of the Temple of Literature, for instance, has been put next to the location of Hanoi on the map, and a picture of Ha Long Bay next to Quang Ninh Province in the north.

But the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum, an iconic monument located in the heart of the Vietnamese capital, is used to illustrate the southern metropolis named after the late president, a Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper journalist reported from the scene.

There are many other inaccuracies such as Chua Cau, an attraction in the Hoi An Old Quarter in the central province of Quang Nam, which is used to illustrate the nearby city of Da Nang.

The map does not include Vietnam’s Truong Sa (Spratly) and Hoang Sa (Paracel) archipelagos.

The logos of national carrier Vietnam Airlines and budget carrier Vietjet are seen on the banner that features the map, along with a giant text that reads “Visit Vietnam.”

The banner does seem to have captured the attention of many passengers at the Yangon airport, few of whom seem aware of the mistakes.

The two carriers told Tuoi Tre on Wednesday that they did not erect the billboard, passing responsibility to the airport’s management.

The banner has been erected to mark the new Ho Chi Minh City – Yangon service offered by Vietjet.

Vietnam Airlines and Vietjet said they had sent a written request to the airport, asking the map be replaced with accurate information and images, after being notified by Tuoi Tre.

The logo of Vietnam Airlines on the banner is also inaccurate as the airline changed its logo a few months ago, a carrier representative said.

The company that manages the airport said it had hired an agency to make the banner.

The billboard had been scheduled to stand there until the end of next week, so it is unlikely that a replacement will be made, according to a source close to Tuoi Tre.

But Vietnam Airlines spokesperson Le Hoang Dung said the carrier will send another request insisting that the Yangon airport correct the information as soon as possible.
