A Vietnam Coast Guard ship on Wednesday towed ashore a Chinese fishing boat with six fishermen on board that had been in distress off Nha Trang, the capital city of the south-central province of Khanh Hoa. The vessel tugged the broken-down foreign boat Ji Hang into the waters of the Bay of Nha Trang at 1:50 am yesterday, Major General Nguyen Van Tuong, political commissar of the High Command of the Vietnam Coast Guard (VCG) confirmed. At 11:00 am the same day, a ship of the Nha Trang Port Authority towed the Chinese boat to the Nha Trang Port. Earlier at 10:00 am on Tuesday, the Vietnam Coastal Information Station released a message to the VCG asking for help for Ji Hang that was drifting due to an engine breakdown in an area belonging to Vietnam’s exclusive economic zone, about 74 nautical miles northeast off Nha Trang, the official said. Immediately after that, the VCG sent vessel CSB 9002 to the scene and after hours of search, it found out the drifting boat at 1:50 pm on Tuesday in an area 28 nautical miles northeast of Khanh Hoa’s Van Phong Bay. The rescue boat then gave care to the six fishermen on the boat in distress and towed it ashore safely.
“The sea was too rough in the waters where the Chinese boat was drifting, with strong winds of up to 74 kph. Therefore, it would have faced danger if the Vietnamese coast guard vessel had not come and rescued it in time,” said Major General Tuong. The Nha Trang Port Authority and the Khanh Hoa Province High Command of Border Guard are carrying out necessary procedures to handle the case.
